Imber is an uninhabited village within the British Army’s training area on the Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire. It’s only open to visitors a few weeks a year.

Given nowhere else to go, Imber’s villagers were ‘liberated’ of their homes in 1943 with just 47 days notice, to make way for American troops to train for the liberation of Europe during the World War II. The villagers were ‘just tenants’, so were easily made to vacate their homes and livelihood, but they understood it would only be until the war ended. However Salisbury Plain remains, even today, too useful a training ground to ever give back to its people.
